Picks

There aren't a lot of great college games this week but there are a few worthy of picks. Last week, I went 12-5 (counting the Thursday night game between the Falcons and Ravens) and now stand at 80-57 on the year.

Noon
No. 7 Wisconsin at Michigan
Wisconsin is currently the Big Ten leader in the BCS standings ahead of Ohio State (No. 9, which they beat) and Michigan State (No. 12, which they lost to). In a three-way tie, the Badgers would win the conference if they can stay ahead in the BCS. I don't think they'll have a difficult time this week against the Wolverines, who show no semblance of defense. Wisconsin scored 83 points last week against Indiana. This week, the Badgers win 49-32.

Piitsburgh at South Florida
The Big East is not good. No team is in the top 25, maybe top 30. But this is a big game for these teams. Pitt leads the Big East with a 3-1 league record while South Florida is 3-2. After losing last week to Connecticut, I like the Panthers to get back on track in this one and win 24-17.

Virginia at Boston College
Virginia takes on one of the weaker offensive ACC teams. Hopefully, the defense can show up a little more than previous weeks. Except for the Miami game, the Cavs have allowed ACC teams to score 55, 34, 44, 42, and 33 points. Not good. I think the defense will do better today against the Eagles, but it won't be enough, because BC's defense is quality and will hold down Virginia's offense enough. 27-20.

N.C. State at North Carolina
N.C. State must win out to win the ACC Atlantic. They still have the edge over FSU with a head-to-head win and still get to face Maryland. I like the Wolfpack in this one. Too much offense for depleted UNC to deal with. 31-24.

3:30
No. 6 Stanford at Cal
Cal nearly pulled the upset last week at home over Oregon but came up just short. I like the Cardinal to hand the Bears their second straight home loss. Cal keeps it close though. 33-27.

No. 9 Ohio State at No. 20 Iowa
What is wrong with Iowa? They barely got by Indiana two weeks ago and then lost to Northwestern last week. But those games were on the road. The Hawkeyes get a welcome breath of fresh air back at home where they are very strong. The Buckeyes must keep winning to keep pace in the Big Ten race. I like Iowa though to get the win 22-17.

No. 16 Virginia Tech at No. 24 Miami
The Hokies struggled for awhile last week at UNC. The week before, they nearly lost to a Georgia Tech team playing without Josh Nesbitt for most of the game. Miami crushed the Jackets last week. Miami freshman QB Stephen Morris looks like the real deal. Miami beats Tech, forcing the Hokies to beat Virginia next week just to win the Coastal Division. 31-30.

Illinois at Northwestern at Wrigley Field
A game worth watching just to see two teams play on a baseball field and go in only on direction on the field. Because of player safety concerns, neither offense will be scoring in the end zone closest to the outfield wall, because it is too close to the out of bounds line. Illinois looked like a strong team early in the year, playing at a level just below the top Big Ten teams. The last two weeks though, the Illini have lost to Michigan in the 67-65 OT game and then Big Ten cellar-dweller Minnesota last week. Northwestern is at home at Wrigley and has the momentum, having just beaten Iowa. Wildcats win 38-27.

7:00
No. 13 Arkansas at No. 21 Mississippi State
The Bulldogs have been a fun story, but last week they just played a better team in Alabama and I think the Razorbacks will win today, too. 31-23.

8:00
No. 8 Nebraska at No. 19 Texas A&M
Too much offense for the Aggies to handle. Nebraska wins a close one 35-30.

No. 25 Florida State at Maryland
I am still not a believer in the Terps. They've played a soft schedule this year. Virginia had them beat up through the third quarter last week. I think the Seminoles possess too much speed for Maryland. The Terps give a valiant effort at home, but FSU wins 38-28 and makes the Atlantic Division a race between the Noles and the Wolfpack.
