Dallas edges Washington, Virginia escapes with a win against Norfolk State, Bowl game pick, UConn women going for 89

Lots to talk about in this post, so hopefully I keep it short for each subject.

DALLAS
The Cowboys looked well on their way to a blowout win over the Redskins on Sunday, but never delivered a knockout punch. As a result, the Skins climbed back into the game and almost won. A field goal by David Buehler and interception by Terence Newman, however, sealed the 33-30 win for the Boys. Skins QB Rex Grossman had a record day in his first start since  2008, throwing for four TDs, but he also had two interceptions and lost a fumble.
If Dallas is going to be an elite playoff team next year under Jason Garrett, it'll have to play a lot better on defense and learn to close out games. Dallas went into the half up 20-7, but missed one field goal and kicked two other field goals which were barely longer than extra points. Also, one time, they went for it on fourth and one from the one and didn't make a TD. I tallied up the missed opportunities, and the Cowboys could have been leading 34-7 at the break, thus making it 41-7 and putting the game out of reach with their TD at the beginning of the third quarter. Instead, because of the offense had trouble converting in the red zone, the Redskins were down by a managable margin and climbed back into it.I'm excite for next year. I think Garrett can make us a playoff team again, but a Super Bowl run won't be possible without a better defense that can close out games.

UVA
Virginia men's basketball barely won against 1-7 Norfolk State last night, 50-49. Down 49-48 with just less than five seconds left, K.T. Harrell stepped to the line for two free throws and missed both. Assane Sene tipped in the second miss though for the winning basket. It was his only field goal all game and Sene is not known for having great hands. The Cavs definitely escaped with a 'W' when they probably didn't deserve it.
I was at work, and when I saw the game was coming down to the wire on the espn.com gamecast, I went out to my car to listen to the final minute on the radio.
I suppose this was a classic letdown or trap game scenario for Virginia (and the Cavs know something about playing great games followed by real stinkers). After defeating Minnesota and Virginia Tech on the road, and Oregon at home, Virginia was ripe for an upset, especially without Mike Scott. Against Oregon, both Mustapha Farrakhan and K.T. Harrell got hot, but last night, only Mu was the only Wahoo to score in double figures.
Congrats to the guys for gutting one out and especially to Sene for the game-winning basket. Sene has usually been a pain to watch on offense, but I love his attitude and work ethic. He never seems to let up. Glad to see it paid off. I almost feel bad for Norfolk State. The Spartans took us to the brink, so hats off to those guys for being upset-minded against an ACC team in their building despite being 1-7.
All I can say is, "Hurry back Mike Scott!"

BOWL PICK, UPDATED RECORD
I went 1-2 in Saturday's bowl picks. I went back through the last few weeks and tabulated my overall record for picking football games and it is now 115-74.
Today, Southern Miss and Louisville tangle in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla. Louisville is 6-6 out of the Big East. I'll take a probably more motivated Southern Miss team, which is 8-4, to win, 38-28.
I'll also make a few quick picks for the next few days' bowl games.
Wednesday-MAAC Bowl Las Vegas-Utah vs. Boise State-Broncos beat the Utes, 37-23.
Thursday-Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego-San Diego State vs. Navy-Aztecs win, 27-26.
Friday-Sheraton Hawaii Bowl-Hawaii vs. Tulsa-Warriors win, 49-31.

The Connecticut women's basketball team goes for its 89th straight win tonight, which would break the 88-game streak set by John Wooden's UCLA team. The Huskies host No. 14 FSU.
