Virginia pitcher Will Roberts tosses perfect game

Even those of you not always paying attention to UVA sports or sports in general probably heard about this rare accomplishment. On Tuesday, UVA's Will Roberts pitched a perfect game for the Cavaliers in a 2-0 win over visiting George Washington. It was the first perfect game in Virginia history and also happened to be the 2000th victory in UVA history.
As far as how Roberts' perfecto stacks up nationally, it was the eighth perfect game to be recorded in Division I since 1957 and 19th overall, according to reporter Jay Jenkins' game recap in the Daily Progress. The last perfect game was thrown by an Auburn pitcher in 2002.
It is a huge accomplishment and for a midweek college baseball game which barely would barely register as news for news outlets surrounding Charlottesville, the perfect game catapulted UVA into the national spotlight--Roberts' last out was the top play on Sportscenter for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Roberts is a junior from Richmond who was selected by the Angels in the 49th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. He's actually 12-0 in his career at UVA and 5-0 this season.
The last no hitter for a UVA pitcher occurred on Easter Sunday in 2006--a home date with Boston College--a game which I was actually at. Mike Ballard, currently with the Baltimore Orioles organization, allowed zero hits but fell four-players-on-base shy of a perfect game. I had a program and Ballard autographed it after the game, as he did for several people lined up along the fence near third base.
This week also saw the installment of Virginia as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Cavaliers are 25-2 and 8-1 in the ACC and travel to Virginia Tech for a three-game series with the Hokies starting Friday.
