Random thoughts

Been about one and a half weeks since I last posted, so I thought I'd just post a few quick thoughts.

UVa baseball: Undoubtedly, one of the reasons I haven't posted in awhile is because I knew that in this post, I'd have to face the painful 3-2, 13-inning loss Virginia endured to South Carolina in the CWS to end its baseball season. I've rehashed it enough with other people though, so I've decided not to write extensively about it here. Suffice to say, there were some breaks that didn't go the Cavaliers' way and also, we didn't take advatage of our opportunities. Meanwhile, SC played well and got the breaks it needed to win a second straight national title, as the Gamecocks defeated Florida in two straight games in the championship series. Virginia had an incredible run, however, and hopefully that isn't lost in the defeat. The Hoos set a school record again with 56 wins, and won an ACC title and the Charlottesville Regional and Super Regional.

Wimbledon: Right now, England's favorite tennis son, Andy Murray, is battling Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon men's semifinals. Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the other semifinal earlier today. England has not had a native win its Grand Slam since 1936 and early on in the Murray-Nadal match, it looked like Murray was poised to reach the championship, winning the first set, 7-5. Since then, though, it has been all Nadal as the 10-time Slam champ has won two consecutive sets and seems well on his way to winning a third. If Nadal goes on to win, he will face Djokovic in the final Sunday. Even if Nadal wins, Djokovic will overtake Nadal as the No. 1 player in the world by virtue of losing only one match all year (in the French Open semis to Roger Federer). Tomorrow, Maria Sharapova tries to win her fourth Grand Slam and first Wimbledon title since 2004 when she takes on Petra Kvitova in the ladies final.

Lockouts: The NFL is still in a lockout but optimism surrounds the talks now and hopefully, within a couple weeks, fans can be assured of a 2011-12 NFL season occurring. Today, right after midnight, the NBA owners locked out the players as the league couldn't agree on several issues as their collective bargaining agreement expired. Hopefully the NFL lockout ends soon, so we won't have to hear the boring news about TWO different professional sports leagues' lockouts.

MLB: The halfway point of the MLB season is almost here, and the Atlanta Braves, my favorite MLB team, have the third best record in the league, at 47-35. Unfortunately, the league's best team is currently the Phillies at 51-31, and they are in the NL East with the Braves.
The Yankees own the league's second best record at 48-31. In the AL East, the Red Sox are right behind the Yankees at 46-34, and the Rays are close behind at 45-36.
In the AL Central, Detroit leads a surprising Cleveland team by 1/2 a game. Cleveland was the story of the first couple months of the season, but the Indians have since settled into reality and will probably be in a dogfight the rest of the season for a playoff berth.
In the AL West, the defending AL champs, the Rangers, lead the Angels by 1 game.
In the NL Central, Milwaukee and St. Louis are tied, with the Pirates -- yes the Pirates! -- and Reds only 2 games behind.
And in the NL West, the defending champion Giants lead the Diamondbacks by 2 games.
