Everyone is picking the Redskins tonight and for good reason. The Cowboys are quite banged up. Tony Romo will play at quarterback but how effective will he be and what will happen once he gets hit four, five, six times? Felix Jones probably won't play and Miles Austin is out. And Dallas was not impressive in its win over San Francisco last week. The Cowboys needed a fourth-quarter comeback and overtime to top the 49ers, who are 2-1 with weak wins over Seattle and Cincinnati.
The Redskins, meanwhile, have looked pretty solid in their first two games. They've beaten the Giants by 14 and the Cardinals on the road. No one is saying the Cards are an excellent team, but the Giants seem to be pretty good after soundly beating the Eagles yesterday. If nothing else, the Giants defense looks very good, and for Rex Grossman and the Skins to open up the season scoring 28 points on that defense makes Rex and the boys look pretty good.
I'm thinking though that Dallas will be eager to go to 2-1 to further erase a breakdown against the Jets two weeks ago on Sunday night. The Cowboys are 0-2 in home openers in Cowboys Stadium, so the gigantic arena known as Jerry World is due a win. Hopefully, the crowd is rowdy and into it early and can get the huge dome loud, not an easy feat as oppoents have said how quiet it is during its first two years of existence.
I'm also thinking the Rex Grossman is slowly but surely coming back down to earth. He had an amazing line in the opener against the G-Men but then threw two INTs against a mediocre Cardinals pass defense last week. Hopefully, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan can dial up some different schemes Grossman hasn't seen or studied and get some pressure on him to force him into some mistakes. The Cowboys will have to win the turnover battle to win this game.
While Miles Austin being out definitely hurts, it is an opportunity for guys like Jesse Holley and Kevin Ogletree to become bigger parts of the offense. We saw last week what Holley did with his opportunity as he set up Dallas on the SF 1-yard line in overtime with a 76-yard catch and run. I do not think the loss of Felix, should he be out, hurts th Cowboys all that much. Dallas is not a good running team, and honestly, I think Tashard Choice usually looks like the better overall running back. Also, this creates a chance for rookie DeMarco Murray to break out and have a big game in front of a huge crowd in Dallas and watching on TV.
I'm expecting a tight, tight game. One of the knocks against the Cowboys is they played poorly against the 49ers. True, they did not look that good for three quarters (although they tied it up at 14 in the second quarter). But let's not forget how good they looked against the Jets for about 3.5 quarters. They had a chance in that one to go up 31-10 and possibly put the nail in the coffin of the Jets. The Cowboys are certainly capable of winning this game and I think they do it, though it won't be easy and will be a very nerve-wracking game.
