Georgia Tech at Virginia - Today, 3:30 p.m. ESPNU

I wasn't able to make college picks in time for today, but here are a few of my thoughts about today's Virginia-Georgia Tech matchup. It is Homecoming for Virginia and will be a homecoming of sorts for Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh, who coached UVa from 2001-09.

There have been whispers of an upset here. My friend, JP, said that Sports Illustrated picked Virginia as an upset special and the Associated Press did, too. I hope these guys are right, but I can't see it happening. JP said Sports Illustrated said that Virginia's good run defense will be able to slow the Georgia Tech rushing attack enough to win. The Yellow Jackets run a triple-option offense for the last few years under head coach Paul Johnson and it has been moving at full force this season. Georgia Tech put up 66 points and over 700 yards of total offense on Kansas. SEVEN HUNDRED YARDS. Are you kidding me? Needless to say, it was a school record for yards.
Virginia's defense has improved this season over 2010, but I doubt it will be enough to slow the Jackets and beat them. Hopefully, Virginia can keep it respectable and not give a performance like Kansas did. I think the Cavaliers offense will be able to move the ball and score points on Groh's defense. It will be interesting to watch how QB Michael Rocco performs today. He had a bad game Sept. 24 against Southern Miss and then led the team on two TD drives in the early going against Idaho Oct. 1. Freshman David Watford was then inserted into the game and the Virginia offense failed to score another touchdown until overtime in a 21-20 win. Watford has been seeing time on the fourth series of every game so far this season and I think it has been disrupting the timing and flow of the Cavalier offense.
An equalizer in this game could be the fact that Virginia had a bye last week. The Virginia defense has had two weeks to prepare for the Jacket offense so maybe that extra time will make a difference. Mike London also said during the bye week that the staff would evaluate each position and the rotation at each position, so maybe the QB situation will be different today. I would like to see Rocco, or whoever starts, play until it is obvious he should be pulled. And I especially don't want to see a player get pulled when he is hot, like what happened to Rocco in the Idaho game.
I like Virginia to put forth a good effort today. The Hoos should be more rested, prepared, and healthy than they have been since the William & Mary game. I don't think it will ultimately be enough though as the Georgia Tech rushing game will eventually wear the defense down in the second half and pull away. Margin of victory will not be a true indicator of how close the game was.
Georgia Tech 45, Virginia 27
