Virginia returns to action tonight after a week off to face Georgia Tech in Atlanta at Philips Arena, home of the NBA's Hawks. Georgia Tech's arena, Alexander Memorial Coliseum, is undergoing major renovations and the team isn't playing any games in it this year. The Yellow Jackets are 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. As most games are for UVa (14-2, 1-1) right now, it is certainly a winnable game but the Cavaliers' style is not going to blow anyone away so I'd expect this to be a close game.
Georgia Tech has endured some bad losses this season -- 57-52 to Tulane, which is 0-4 in Conference USA and 12-7 overall, 65-59 to Mercer, and 72-66 to Fordham. It looked like the Jackets were turning a corner recently when they gave Duke a tough game but lost at home 81-74 on Jan. 7. They then beat N.C. State, which has been solid this season, 82-71. Most recently though, on Sunday, the Jackets scored just 50 points in an 11-point loss to Maryland. So it is tough to know exactly what team Virginia will encounter tonight.
Glen Rice Jr., son of former NBA player Glen Rice, is the Jackets' leading scorer at 13.8 points per game. He also averages 6.6 rebounds. Mfon Udofia is the team's second-leading scorer at 10.8 points per game. After that, four other Georgia Tech players average at least seven points per game so it is a pretty balanced team as far as scoring. The team is shooting just 31 percent from 3, and tends to turn the ball over a lot (15 times per game, 246th in the country) so hopefully Virginia can force the Jackets into some mistakes and defend the 3 (something UVa does well) and come away with a win.
