Cavaliers, Cowboys reaction

I'm a little late this week getting to reaction to last week's games, so I'll be brief. North Carolina 28, Virginia 17 I finally finished watching this game for the first time today. An equally frustrating, encouraging, and forboding performance. The good: The Virginia offense gained over 450 yards on what was a vaunted UNC defense. In fact, the Hoos outgained the Heels. Quarterback Michael Rocco was quite accurate at times and he also showed some good escapability and athleticism on a rushing TD. The line protected Rocco quite well, as he was only sacked once by a strong UVa defense. Coming into the game, no one had been able to run on UNC but the Hoos had 170 yards on the ground. The UVa defense got a few stops and was able to bottle up the Heels' rushing attack at times. The final score could have easily been closer than it was. The bad: The Virginia offense shot itself in the foot time and time again, whether it was a fumbled snap, penalties, or just not bein...

NFL wild-card playoff picks

Saturday's games Cardinals (11-5) at Panthers (7-8-1), 4:20 p.m. ESPN Look at the records of these teams and you think this is looking like a Cardinals win. But if you have paid attention to the NFL season, you have to be feeling the Panthers are the pick. Arizona started the season 9-1 but went just 2-4 down the stretch as injuries ravaged the QB position. First Carson Palmer went down and then Drew Stanton, leaving the team with Ryan Lindley, who was signed in November. Lindley has not proven to be a very good QB. He was drafted by the Cardinals two years ago and also has seen time with the Chargers. He has just two TDs compared to 11 career INTs. Injuries have also taken a toll on the running back spot for Arizona, which is down Kerwynn Williams and Marion Grice in the backfield. Meanwhile, Cam Newton has stated to get it going for the Panthers, who have won four straight games, two in blowout fashion over the Saints and the Falcons last week to capture the NFC South crown. NFL picks

Championship Saturday ended up being crazy in college football. I thought Missouri's defense would be able to stand up to Auburn's offense but it could not stop it at all and the Tigers won the SEC title, 59-42. They then got the result they needed in the Big Ten title game as the Michigan State defense did do enough (and its offense did as well) to edge Ohio State, 34-24. As expected, Duke had nothing for Florida State in the ACC championship and the Seminoles trounced the Blue Devils, 45-7, setting up a BCS title game matchup of Florida State vs. Auburn. The NFL will once again have a lot to live up to in Week 14. I last did NFL picks two weeks ago and went 3-3 and am now 35-29 on the season. Colts at Bengals, 1 p.m. CBS Can't trust the Colts on the road in this one. Cincinnati has been inconsistent overall, but is undefeated at home. NFL predictions

Note: If you haven't, vote in my poll on the right side of the page. Only a few hours left. Who do you think will win the NFC East? I struggled a bit with my college picks, going 3-4 (what was I thinking, picking UVa -- more on that next week). Here are my NFL picks, in which I am 21-16 on the year after going 5-4 two weeks ago. Bengals at Lions, 1 p.m. CBS Both of these teams have struggled and shown flashes of greatness. Cincinnati held the Patriots to six points in a 13-6 win two weeks ago then needed OT to beat the Bills (who were down to Thaddeus Lewis as their QB) last week. The Lions won a 40-32 shootout over the Bears then scored nine points two weeks ago in a 22-9 loss to the Packers in which Calvin Johnson did not play because of an injured knee. He played last week as the Lions bounced back in a 31-17 win over the Browns, but he served mostly as a decoy. He should be more productive in today's game. Detroit has clearly played better at home this season as have t...
