MLB season gets under way; UVa sports update; The Cats' Meow -- Kentucky beats Kansas for national championship

MLB
After a long and what I would say is a dragged out spring training, the first weekend of regular season games have been completed. My Braves were swept by the lowly Mets (and then lost Monday night to the Astros) and only managed 14 hits and seven runs in the three games vs. the Mets. They have two more games against the Astros today and Wednesday in Houston. Hopefully they can get off the snide against what was the major's worst team last season. No need to panic yet if you're a Braves fan -- the season is too long. Atlanta was not the only surprising team not to have picked up a win after the first three to four games. The Yankees and Red Sox were also winless, as were the Giants and Twins (the Yanks, Sox, and Giants picked up their first wins Monday night after starting with three losses; not a huge shock there with Minnesota, the AL's worst team last season). If you need an indicator that the season is early, and not to get to excited about anything, there's this: The Orioles swept the Twins in the season's first series and were 3-0. How many times have Baltimore fans seen their team do well early only to falter by midseason? Also, don't forget, the Pirates were first place in the NL Central last year through sometime in July, I believe. They most certainly did not end up there.

UVa SPORTS UPDATE
Baseball: The team just finished up a sweep of Wake Forest in Charlottesville on Monday night. The Cavaliers dominated the Demon Deacons, outscoring them 24-7 over the three games. Virginia is now 22-10-1 (9-6 ACC) on the season and have won 16 consecutive ACC home series; that streak dates back to 2009. The recent surge has also pushed the Cavaliers into the ESPN/USA Today top 25 poll for the first time this season at No. 24. UVa hosts George Washington on Wednesday, then has a big home series this weekend with North Carolina, which was just swept over the weekend by ACC Coastal Division-leading Miami (11-4). The Tar Heels enter the series with a 9-6 ACC mark, so which ever team wins the series will have, at minimum, second place in the division. Florida State leads the Atlantic Division with a 14-1 conference record and is ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Men's lacrosse: The Hoos have lost only once, March 24 at home in overtime to Johns Hopkins. UVa, ranked No. 1 in the country, plays ACC rival Duke on Friday night at 6 p.m.
Men's tennis: Virginia is rolling along undefeated in the outdoor season and ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Cavs face Florida State on Friday at 3 p.m.
Football: The football team wraps up spring practice with the annual Orange-Blue game at 2 p.m. at Scott Stadium on Saturday.
Men's basketball: T.J. McConnell, a point guard transfer from Duquesne, decided today to go to Arizona and not Virginia. For while, UVa seemed to be his top choice but the Cavaliers lost out. He would have been a great get for the program because after sitting out a year, he would have been available to start in 2013-14, the year after Jontel Evans would have graduated.
Women's basketball: I'm a little late here, but the women lost to JMU in the NIT quarterfinals March 25 to wrap up a 25-11 season under first-year coach Joann Boyle. JMU then defeated Syracuse in the quarterfinals but fell to Oklahoma State in the championship game.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Kentucky mostly cruised to a win Monday in the national championship game over Kansas. The Wildcats opened up an 18-point lead and led by 14 at halftime before letting the Jayhawks back in it in the second half. Kansas would make a mini-run followed by Kentucky building the lead back up. Eventually, the Jayhawks cut the deficit down to five points but never got closer.
Ketucky's star center, he of the massive unibrow, Anthony Davis, controlled the game despite making only 1 of 10 field goals. He had 15 rebounds and six blocks. It really was crazy to see someone dominate a game and set the tone with hardly scoring at all.
Kentucky was probably the best team from wire to wire this season in the country. John Calipari was able to get his first championship as coach. The only question now is, will he get to keep it? He's had two previous Final Four trips with Massachusetts and Memphis vacated.
