UVa sports updates

In case you hadn't kept up, here are some UVa sports updates. Note that one team, men's tennis plays in an NCAA championship in a couple hours.

Men's tennis: Virginia ripped through the first five rounds of the NCAA tournament, just dropping one point to Pepperdine in the NCAA semifinals, and meets USC today at 5 p.m. in the national championship. It will be a rematch of last season's final when USC won, 4-3. The Trojans have eliminated the Cavaliers in each of the last three seasons. Before last year, they also topped the Wahoos in the semifinals (2010) and quarterfinals (2009). The women's tennis team concluded its season with a loss in the NCAA tournament round of 16 to Duke.

Baseball: Virginia finished the regular season 36-16-1 with an ACC record of 16-12, good enough for second in the Coastal Division behind North Carolina. The Cavaliers took two of three from both Georgia Tech and Maryland in their final two series. UVa plays its first game in the ACC tournament Thursday as the No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed Clemson at 11 a.m. The ACC tournament is divided into two pools of four teams each (eight out of 12 teams make the tournament) with round-robin formats. Besides itself and the Tigers, UVa's pool also includes No. 1 seed Florida State and No. 8 seed Georgia Tech. Virginia faces the Yellow Jackets on Friday at 11 a.m. and the Seminoles on Saturday at 3 p.m. The team with the best record after round-robin play will face the winner of the other pool Sunday at noon in the championship. The other pool contains No. 2 seed North Carolina, No. 3 seed N.C. State, No. 6 seed Miami and No. 7 seed Wake Forest.

Men's lacrosse: Virginia downed Princeton, 6-5, in the first round of the NCAA tournament but then lost Sunday in the quarterfinals to Notre Dame, 12-10. It was the first time since 2007 that the Cavaliers failed to make the semifinals. The women's lacrosse team fell to Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
