Virginia wins in Game 1 of Charlottesville Regional

After severe weather pushed the schedule back a day, No. 1-seeded Virginia downed No. 4-seeded Army 9-1 on Saturday and will face Appalachian State on Sunday at 3 p.m. The No. 3-seeded Mountaineers beat No. 2-seeded Oklahoma 5-4 in Game 2.
Virginia got three runs in the second, sixth, and eighth innings to back a solid performance by starting pitcher Branden Kline and the bullpen. Kline worked 5.2 innings and gave up an earned run on six hits while striking out five. Kyle Crockett (1.1 IP) and Austin Young (2 IP) gave up just one hit the rest of the way.
On offense, the Cavaliers racked up eight hits. Stephen Bruno had three hits and three RBIs and Branden Cogswell had a bases-clearing double in the sixth. Brandon Downes also had three hits and Jared King got the other hit for the Wahoos.
In Game 2, Appalachian State pitcher Ryan Arrowood pitched no-hit ball for 6.1 innings and the Mountaineers led the Sooners 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. Oklahoma managed three runs in the final frame despite zero hits but could not complete the comeback.
Appalachian State's seven through nine hitters went a combined 7 for 10 with three RBIs. Trey Holmes led the way with three hits and an RBI. Noah Holmes, Trey's brother, had two hits and two RBIs.
The Mountaineers will send Seth Grant (6-3, 3.33 ERA) to the mound on Sunday. Virginia will counter with Artie Lewicki (4-2, 3.33 ERA). In his last outing, Lewicki helped Virginia shut out Florida State 7-0 in the ACC tournament. Grant gave up eight runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings and took a loss against Samford in the Southern Conference tournament in his last outing.
Before the Cavaliers and Mountaineers face off Sunday, the Sooners and Black Knights play each other in an elimination game. The winner of that game will play the loser of the Virginia-Appalachian State game about 7 p.m. in a second elimination game. So, Virginia could play back-to-back games Sunday or could win the 3 p.m. game and then wait until Monday to play.
