PHILLIP SIMS

The NCAA let Virginia know Wednesday that it granted a waiver to quarterback transfer Phillip Sims, meaning the former Alabama quarterback from Chesapeake High School is eligible to play this fall and does not have to sit out a year and then begin playing with the Cavaliers in 2013.
The Virginia quarterback situation is very intriguing going into this season. There are five players on the roster who have some combination of these two things: flashes of great play on the field and great potential. They are: Michael Rocco, Phillips Sims, David Watford, Greyson Lambert, and Matt Johns. I wrote more about the crowded position under center back on May 3 (http://aaronampedup.blogspot.com/2012/05/sims-to-virginia-official.html) and May 1 (http://aaronampedup.blogspot.com/2012/05/manufactured-drama-in-richmond-nascar.html). Read those for more of my thoughts.

HOOPS
Devon Hall

Tony Bennett and the UVa coaching staff has been searching long and hard for an elite point guard to run UVa's offense in the future. It's finally hooked a big one. Devon Hall, who was going to be in the class of 2013 but reclassified to the class of 2014, committed to UVa on July 2. Hall is a 6-foot-5, four-star prospect out of Virginia Beach who drew interest from several big-name schools such as Georgetown, Marquette, North Carolina, and Texas and got offers from the likes of Florida, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, and Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers have Jontel Evans at point guard for one more year and also have incoming recruit Taylor Barnette who will be eligible this coming season but Hall gives UVa a great option in the backcourt starting in 2014.

MIKE SCOTT
For those that hadn't heard, Mike Scott was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Draft on June 28 in the second round with the 43rd overall pick. He is the first Cavalier drafted since 2008 when Sean Singletary was drafted 42nd overall by the Sacramento Kings. Congrats to Mike.
