College picks

After a day of fun at Busch Gardens with my mom, I'm trying to do a few picks on my phone. Commentary will be kept to a minimum but I have to get in a few words and picks on what is a great football Saturday. Also my favorite baseball team, the Braves, lost today in controversial fashion in MLB's first wild card game in history. I'll discuss that and the playoffs in general, in a few days.

Northwestern at Penn State, Noon ESPN
The Wildcats are 5-0 for the third time in five years but the Nittany Lions have won three straight under new coach Bill O'Brien after starting 0-2.
Penn State 30, Northwestern 27

No. 4 LSU at No. 10 Florida, 3:30 p.m. CBS
The Tigers have struggled the last two weeks, even against Towson last week in Baton Rouge. The Gators are playing well in their second year under Will Muschamp.
Florida 27, LSU 21

No. 17 Oklahoma at Texas Tech, 3:30 p.m CBS
Oklahoma fell at home to Kansas State last week. Things won't get any easier in Lubbock where the Sooners haven't had good luck in recent years.
Texas Tech 31, Oklahoma 28

No. 5 Georgia at No. 6 South Carolina, 7 p.m. ESPN
Big, early season SEC game. Georgia is one of the top scoring offenses in the country.
Georgia 38, South Carolina 34

No. 8 West Virginia at No. 11 Texas, 7 p.m. FOX
No telling how many points will be scored in this game. Both teams are undefeated and score tons of points. WVU won 70-63 over Baylor last week.
West Virginia 49, Texas 45

Virginia Tech at North Carolina, 12:30 p.m. ACC Network
The Hokies tend to focus and play well after losses and they already did it once this year after losing to Pitt. They beat Bowling Green. Playing at the Tar Heels after losing to Cincy will be a tougher rebound but I think they will do it. No reason to believe the Hokies can't still win the ACC Coastal Division again. Neither loss was a conference loss.
Virginia Tech 26, North Carolina 23

Virginia at Duke, 3 p.m. RSN
Though Virginia has lost three straight games, hopes are high in Hooville. Highly touted transfer QB Phillip Sims will start his first collegiate game after playing consistently better than Michael Rocco in recent weeks. Duke is 4-1, but hasn't played many tough teams yet. It's only difficult opponent was Stanford and the Cardinal cruised to a victory. If the Blue Devils win, a bowl game for the first time since 1995 is definitely within reach although the schedule gets harder. The Cavaliers need to get their run game going to have a good chance. The defense had some good moments last week but also some breakdowns. Duke plays some version of the spread like La. Tech did. I think this will be a shootout like two years ago at Duke which the Blue Devils won 55-47. Virginia needs to come out on  the winning side this time, however, if it hopes to make a run at a bowl game.
Virginia 37, Duke 35
