Miami takes control in ACC Coastal Division

Miami downed Virginia Tech 30-12 Thursday night at home. Not only is the Hokies' streak of eight seasons with at least 10 wins over, but they have to win two of their final three games (Florida State, BC, UVa) just to get bowl eligible. Ironically, Tech, at 2-3 in the ACC, could still win the division if things fall into place. However, Miami is 4-2 and in the driver's seat. UNC is 3-2 and beat both Tech and Miami but is ineligible for the ACC title because of NCAA sanctions. Duke is 3-2 but lost to Tech. As long as Miami beats Virginia on Nov. 10, the Hurricanes' contest at Duke in the season finale could be for the Coastal title. Miami has one other game in there but it is a non-ACC game against South Florida. Who would have guessed that Durham could be the sight of a significant football game? Crazy. Duke faces Clemson on Saturday, and then Georgia Tech and then the home date with Miami.
I am very surprised the kind of season Tech is having. Even with the Hokies struggling early in the season, I still thought, with UNC ineligible especially, that the Hokies would win the division. Tech being 4-5 was unimaginable to me. I knew the offense would struggle but I thought the defense would carry the team to victories like in so many other seasons over the past decade or so. Even before tonight's game, I thought Tech would win. The Hokies were down 20-0 to Duke a few weeks ago but ended up winning 41-20. I thought that was the moment the Hokies had their wake-up call and were going to play better the rest of the season. Tech generally has that moment early in the season and the Duke game was in mid-October but apparently that didn't wake up the team either.
