Darion Atkins out with stress "reaction"; Mike Scott leads Hawks in scoring

DARION ATKINS
The injury bug has bitten Virginia again.

UVa sophomore forward
Darion Atkins
Darion Atkins, who was said to be having trouble with his right shin the past few games, was revealed Monday to have a stress reaction in that leg. Coach Tony Bennett says that the team will take Atkins week-to-week and see what happens. He will definitely be out for the Florida State game Saturday. Beyond that, his status is uncertain.

From what I have read, this appears to be the pre-cursor to a stress fracture. So, hopefully sitting out Atkins will help it heal and maybe it won't grow into a bigger injury and further hamper him this season.

Atkins started the year out strong. According to Whitey Reid of The Daily Progress, Atkins averaged 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 24 minutes per game during his first 12 games of the season. In his last four, those numbers are down to 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 13 minutes per game.

As they did last year, the Cavaliers are struggling through several injuries this season. Sophomore Malcolm Brogdon is redshirting this season after having off-season foot surgery to correct a problem. Jontel Evans is just now getting back from his own foot surgery and has been rusty the past few games. Akil Mitchell is said to be suffering from a sprained ankle but hasn't shown too many ill effects. And now Atkins. The hits just keep on coming to a team that is trying to snap a two-game losing streak. The 'Hoos have also lost three of their past five contests after an 9-2 start to the season.

MIKE SCOTT
Former UVa forward Mike Scott

A friend of mine, Matt Lutey, pointed out to me that former Virginia star Mike Scott, who led the Cavaliers to an NCAA tournament appearance last season while averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game, had the best professional game of his career Monday. Scott, who plays for the Atlanta Hawks, scored 10 points and added three rebounds and an assist in just 16 minutes of action. The 10 points actually led the Hawks in scoring. Atlanta had a dreadful game overall, losing to the Bulls, 97-58. Scott was drafted in the second round by the Hawks and had also spent time in the NBDL with the Bakersfield Jam but was recently called up by the Hawks.
