Virginia falters at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech 66, Virginia 60

The Cavaliers blew a nine-point halftime lead to the Yellow Jackets on Sunday, losing 66-60 and snapping their four-game winning streak.

Not gonna lie. Did not watch this game because I was at work and it wasn't one I care to watch the recording of. But here are a few thoughts based on what I've read and know about this team.

Joe Harris scored 18 points, but only four in the second half as the team made eight field goals after halftime. Harris also had six turnovers, a season-high Georgia Tech had four players score in double figures led by Mfon Udofia's 15 points. Freshman Robert Carter Jr. dominated down low, recording 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Georgia Tech was the first team in the ACC to score more than 60 points on the Wahoos this season. The defensive breakdowns in the second half is what surprises me the most. UVa gave up 38 points in half, which has to be close to a record for the season.

Akil Mitchell had 13 points and 12 rebounds, BUT he was only 6 of 14 shooting and he missed some easy lay-ins near the rim.

Jontel Evans had four points, four assists, BUT also had four turnovers. You never want to have as many or more turnovers than assists as a point guard. I read that he was out of control at times during the game.

Fans are wondering why Paul Jesperson starts. We know it his defense, but he had another lackluster game yesterday, recording three points in 31 minutes. Justin Anderson came off the bench and played 25 minutes and had 10 points. Once Anderson gets as solid as coach Tony Bennett wants him to be on defense, I think he will continue to take more of Jesperson's minutes.

Mike Tobey has proven he is an excellent shooter this season. That said, he must get more shots. He took ZERO field goals as he scored just one point on 1 of 2 free-throw shooting. How is that possible? He also only played nine minutes. I would think and hope that Bennett needs to find more minutes for the young big man.

Virginia really could have used this win to solidify its hold on second in the ACC and prevent another bad loss damaging its NCAA tournament resume but instead, it slid to third, in a tie with North Carolina, and can now add it to the list of bad losses with Delaware, Old Dominion, and Wake Forest. The second half of Virginia's ACC schedule is tougher than its first half. Thursday's home game vs. Clemson needs to be a win if the boys want to dance. The road will get a lot tougher after that with games at Miami, at Maryland, at Florida State, at UNC, and home games vs. Duke and this Georgia Tech squad again. Clemson took it to UVa in the first meeting of the season, 59-44, at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Cavs need to get back on track and I think they can at home where they have played great but it will be a close contest.
