Wahoo wanderings

Been awhile since I posted anything so let's hop around the UVa sports world and catch up on some things you have maybe been missing.

Men's tennis
Alex Domijan
The Cavaliers avenged national semifinals losses to Georgia in 2007 and 2008 on Monday, finally beating the Bulldogs, 4-1, at the University of Illinois reaching the national championship for a third straight season. The last two seasons, the Cavaliers have lost to USC. This year, they will face another team from LA, UCLA,
which found itself in and even tighter match than UVa with Ohio State, but the Bruins ended up pulling it out over the Buckeyes, 4-3.

It was not an easy 4-1 match. Virginia won the doubles point and appeared to have most of the singles matches in hand but things got shaky after that. Alex Domijan lost his first set but won two straight sets to end up clinching the victory for the Wahoos, 6-4, in the final set. Had he not come back and won, Virginia might have ended up losing 4-3 to Georgia. Jarmere Jenkins lost at No. 1 singles and, other than Domijan's match, Virginia was down 4-2 and 1-0 in decisive third sets of other singles matches (Ryan Shane and Mac Styslinger, respectively).

Virginia's championship bout with UCLA is at 2 p.m. and can be followed live online at http://www.fightingillini.com/ncaatennis2013/.

Baseball
Virginia picked up a huge series win last Thursday through Saturday at North Carolina, which was 46-6 heading into the series and ranked No. 2 in the country. The Cavaliers took Game 1, 10-4, lost Game 2, 8-5, and hung on in 11 innings in Game 3 to snag an 8-7 victory. UVa finished the regular season with a 45-9 overall record and a 22-8 ACC mark. The 45 wins ties for most ever in the regular season by the program, which also won that many in 2006, 2010, and 2011. Despite the all-around superior record, the Cavaliers earned the No. 3 seed in the ACC tournament. Florida State had a worse record, but got the No. 2 seed because it won the Atlantic Division. Virginia was second in the Coastal Division to UNC. The Wahoos would have needed to sweep the Tar Heels to win the Coastal.

Virginia is in Pool B with No. 2 seed Florida State, No. 6 seed Virginia Tech and No. 7 seed Georgia Tech. Pool A is No. 1 seed North Carolina, No. 4 seed N.C. State, No. 5 seed Clemson, and No. 8 seed Miami. Each team plays every other team in their pool Wednesday through Saturday and then the championship game is played on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ESPN2) between the top two teams out of each pool. In pool play, Virginia faces Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. Thursday, and Florida State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Brian O'Connor

Virginia placed six players on All-ACC teams and Brian O'Connor was named coach of the year for the
fourth time in his 10 years at UVa. Second baseman Reed Gragnani, outfielder Mike Papi, DH/pitcher/utility man Nick Howard, and closer Kyle Crockett were named to the first team while outfielder Joe McCarthy and shortstop Branden Cogswell were selected to the second team. McCarthy picked up conference freshman of the year honors, as well.

Football
Rising junior running back Clifton Richardson decided to transfer from Virginia last week. It is unknown
Clifton Richardson
where he's headed. Richardson was productive as a freshman for the 'Hoos in 2011, when he rushed 72 times for 366 yards and two touchdowns. His sophomore year was dogged by injuries and he tried to rush back from a hamstring pull. The coaches probably should have redshirted him. Richardson was certainly not going to be a No. 1 option in coming seasons but he is a tough loss, especially in short-yardage situations where Virginia struggled mightily in 2012. Richardson, big at 6-foot, 210 pounds, could have proved valuable on third- and fourth-and-short.

Women tennis
Virginia upset Texas, 4-3, in the second round of the NCAA tournament but that is where its run would stop. The Cavaliers were beaten, 5-0, by Texas A&M in the round of 16. The 'Hoos ended their season with a 19-10 record. Julia Elbaba will compete in the singles tournament which starts at Illinois on Wednesday.

Men's lacrosse
UVa experienced its worst season in nine years, finishing the season with a 7-8 record and missing the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004. UVa surprisingly beat No. 1 Maryland in the semifinals of the ACC tournament 13-6 to give itself hope for a conference title and NCAA berth but the UNC ended those hopes in the championship with a 16-13 victory.

Women's lacrosse
Virginia finished 11-10 and lost in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals. In the first round, the Wahoos beat Penn, 12-6. In the second round, at Georgetown, the Cavs upset the Hoyas 12-10 to set up a rematch in the quarterfinals with ACC rival UNC. The Tar Heels beat the 'Hoos earlier in the season 8-7 and won the quarterfinal, 13-9.

Denny McCarthy
Men's golf
Virginia sophomore Denny McCarthy will participate in the NCAA championships at Atlanta's Capital City Club after finishing in a tie for second in regionals at Ohio State last week. McCarthy shot a tournament-best 5-under 66 in the final round to vault himself from 20th to second. He almost shot Virginia into contention enough to advance to the championships as a team but it did not quite get there.
