Broncos vs. Seahawks at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.; 6:30 p.m. FOX
Note: If you haven't, please vote in the poll on the right side of the page. Which team takes home the Lombardi Trophy? I'm a little surprised right now Seattle has so few supporters.
First off, I cannot start my next post without mentioning those Wahoos. They grabbed a huge road victory at No. 18 Pittsburgh on Sunday when Malcolm Brogdon hit a dagger of a 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left to lift the Wahoos to a 48-45 win over the Panthers. Virginia is now 8-1 in the ACC in second place behind undefeated Syracuse. Duke and Pittsburgh both have three conference losses. More on that game to come later.
On to tonight's NFL showcase in a winter wonderland. Well, not really.
And I think that will end up being a big factor. The nightmare scenario did not come true for the NFL. No blizzard in New York. No ice. Maybe no rain. No sub-freezing temperatures. Nothing to snarl traffic up too badly or ground flights, or move the game to Saturday or Monday.
In fact, the weather is quite nice today. It is around 50 degrees.
And I think that will favor Peyton Manning and the Broncos. If the game was colder and messier, I would side with the Seahawks' running game and defense, which is superior to the Broncos'. Denver, of course, has the edge in the passing game and with overall offense. Defense wins championships, but I think the offense for Denver is one of the best ever and the conditions are set up to make things tough on Seattle. And I think people have overlooked the running game and defense of the Broncos, which has gotten better and better as the year has gone on, despite some injuries to the defense, including All-Pro linebacker Von Miller.
I do like Seattle's offense. Russell Wilson has a great head on his shoulders and a surprisingly strong arm (and good legs), Marshawn Lynch is a beast in the backfield, and Doug Baldwin highlights an underrated group of receivers. An X-factor to watch will be Percy Harvin. If he gets a lot of touches and becomes effective for the Seahawks offense, the game could swing in their favor.
The best thing to watch in the game will be the mental battle between Manning and the Seahawks' secondary, highlighted by -- of course -- brash-talking cornerback Richard Sherman. Who gets the edge in that matchup will obviously go a long way toward determining the winner of the game.
I think that be Manning on this day. It would be a crying shame for one of the best QBs in the history of the game to not have more than one Super Bowl victory so I think this is Manning's time. He needs to seize it.
Alright, enough talking. There's been enough of that in these two weeks leading up to the game. You are probably sick of it and just want to watch what will probably be a great game. Enjoy!
