No. 14 Virginia at Virginia Tech, 9 p.m. NBC29 WeatherPlus, ESPN3.com
First things first. You might notice the strange channel for tonight's game. Some areas, like Lynchburg, are showing the game on different channels like WDBJ. But in the Charlottesville area, the game would normally be on NBC but is being pushed off there because of Olympics coverage. Funny enough, the game then will be shown on NBC29 WeatherPlus. If you get the channel with Comcast, it is 208. I've read online that this won't be an HD channel. A safer bet today would be ESPN3.com if you have a reliable Internet connection.
Virginia meets Virginia Tech today in Blacksburg in only the second rematch so far on UVa's ACC schedule. The other one was Florida State -- the Cavaliers downed FSU on the road, 62-50, on Jan. 4 and 78-66 in Charlottesville on Jan. 18.
UVa beat the Hokies, 65-45, on Jan. 25 at John Paul Jones Arena. Malcolm Brogdon led the team with 18
points, Joe Harris had 12, Mike Tobey added eight, and Anthony Gill came off the bench to contribute seven. Virginia ended the first half on a 21-6 run and led 34-17 at halftime. The Hokies closed to within 12 points early in the second half but Virginia eventually ballooned the lead to 21 points. For the Hokies, Devin Wilson had 12 points, and Jarell Eddie, Joey Van Zegeren, and C.J. Barksdale all tallied seven points. The Hokies had a rough shooting night, only making 14 of 42 field goals (33.3 percent), 3 of 18 3-pointers (16.7 percent), and 14 of 25 free throws (56 percent).
Virginia is going for its 10th win in a row tonight. The Cavaliers haven't lost since the Duke game Jan. 13.
They are also going for their fifth consecutive victory over the Hokies. Tech last beat Virginia in Charlottesville, 47-45, on Jan. 22, 2012. The last time the Hokies beat the 'Hoos in Blacksburg was Feb. 13, 2010.
Like all ACC road games, the Cavaliers need to be careful tonight. All it could take is a couple Hokies getting hot from 3 and it could be a close ballgame. Tech lost 10 games in a row before finally snapping its streak with a 52-45 home win over Miami on Saturday. However, Tech nearly knocked off Pittsburgh on the road Feb. 8 but lost, 62-57, in double overtime.
Against the Hurricanes, Wilson and Barksdale both had 12 points (Wilson's all came in the final 3:37 and he had nine assists) and against the Panthers, Eddie scored 15 points while Van Zegeren and Wilson had 10 each.
Adam Smith (calf) is out for tonight's game and did not play in the teams' earlier meeting and Cadarian Raines is questionable with the flu.
