Virginia hoops update

Late Tuesday night, Marial Shayok, a 6-foot-6 native of Canada, committed to Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers for this coming season. Shayok, who would likely play a wing position for the Cavaliers, is a three-star prospect who had originally committed to coach Buzz Williams at Marquette. When Williams bolted to Virginia Tech, Shayok opened up his recruitment and then chose UVa. Shayok has been playing at Blair Academy in New Jersey, which also produced Mike Tobey.

Shayok is listed by some articles as 6-foot-7 and Whitelaw Reid of The Daily Progress had a source that said Shayok is more like 6-foot-5. What is known is Shayok has a wingspan of about 7-feet and has a brother and father who are taller so he could still grow. He is known for playing solid defense and being a versatile player, obviously big pluses to Bennett. If he does grow 3-4 more inches, he could end up being an Akil Mitchell type player with more offensive ability. Whatever happens with Shayok, it is an exciting development for the basketball program.

The 2014-15 non-conference schedule is also becoming clearer. We knew already that Virginia is traveling to face VCU and must play a road game in the Big Ten as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The challenge is scheduled by matching up teams either based on where they finished in their conference the year before or where they are predicted to finish (can't recall which one). Either way, that means UVa will be facing a team like Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin or Ohio State on the road. I would kind of be surprised if UVa and Wisconsin meet for a third straight season. The Spartans-Cavaliers NCAA tournament game was one of the best of the Big Dance so I could see TV wanting that matchup. It has also been confirmed that Virginia will play in the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn on November 28-29. This was a rumor for awhile but only recently confirmed. UVa will face some combo of Rutgers, La Salle, and Vanderbilt (probably two of these teams) in the classic. Also, Virginia and George Washington locked up a home-and-home series as well. The 'Hoos host the Colonials on Nov. 21 this season. UVa and GW almost played in the NCAA tournament, too, in the third round but GW was beaten by Memphis, which then lost to Virginia. Additionally, Reid said that CBS Sports has sources saying that Harvard and Virginia will play this season as well, though this is unconfirmed.
