Wahoo wanderings

Baseball: The Cavaliers took two of three from the Seminoles in Tallahassee this weekend. They won, 5-3, in 10 innings Friday when Derek Fisher doubled home a pair of runs in the 10th. Saturday, FSU shut out the Wahoos, 7-0. Virginia took the rubber match Sunday, 4-3. Nick Howard got the final four outs on the

mound for the Wahoos, striking out every batter he faced. It was the 10th straight ACC series won by UVa. Virginia is now 37-8, 18-6 on the season. FSU is 33-11, 17-7. Miami swept Clemson this weekend to take first place in the Coastal Division from UVa. Miami is 32-13 but 19-5 in the ACC. Since the Hurricanes dropped two of three games vs. UVa at home, they have won 19 of 20. Virginia travels to face Old Dominion on Tuesday and then is off until the next week when the Cavaliers host Liberty and a series with Georgia Tech.

Football: Virginia tight end Jake McGee announced Friday he would be transferring from the Cavaliers. McGee was the Cavaliers' leading receiver last year and was known for his circus catches in both 2013 and 2012. Last season, he came up with 43 catches for 395 yards and two touchdowns. McGee stated he wanted to use his last year to be more of a traditional tight end. He
Jake McGee
was being used as tight end-wideout hybrid in the spring. He graduates in May, meaning he will be eligible to play where ever he transfers to for the fall.

The transfer comes as a surprise and the timing is weird, seeing it came at the end of the spring, more than two weeks after the annual spring game. This only furthers the view that Mike London might be losing his team. Perhaps McGee knows the offense will be bad again and want to showcase his skills with a better team, which would then help raise his NFL draft stock. Whatever the case may be, it doesn't instill confidence that this coming season can be successful.

Men's tennis: UVa cruised to its eighth straight ACC tournament championship Sunday in Cary, N.C. The Wahoos beat North Carolina, 4-0. Virginia has won 10 of the last 11 ACC tournaments. In three of those tournaments, the Cavaliers have defeated all of their opponents 4-0. Virginia will learn who it faces first in the NCAA tournament Tuesday. The tournament itself begins May 10 and 11, and Virginia will most certainly host its first couple matches.

Women's tennis: Virginia finished in a four-way tie for first in the ACC regular-season standings. The Cavs ended up with the No. 3 seed in the ACC tournament and won their first conference championship Sunday by downing Duke, 4-2. Like the men, UVa will find out its opponent and destination for the NCAA tournament Tuesday.

Men's lacrosse: The team won the "ACC Showcase" (read: last place) game against North Carolina in Chester, Pa., on Saturday, 13-10. The victory should boost the team's chances of hosting a first-round NCAA tournament game. The selections for the tournament, which starts May 10, are next Sunday.

Women's lacrosse: The Wahoos finished the regular season and ACC tournament with a record of 10-8. UVa lost in the tournament semifinals to Maryland, 15-9. NCAA tournament selections are next Sunday and the first round is May 9 and 11.

Men's golf: The team won two tournaments this spring and has risen all the way to No. 10 in the national poll. However, Virginia managed just a fifth-place finish in the ACC tournament, which concluded Sunday in North Carolina. Denny McCarthy was tied for second as overall finisher. The NCAA tournament beings May 15.
