Wahoo wanderings

Baseball: The Cavaliers were beaten pretty badly at Old Dominion, 8-1, on April 29. Since then, though, the team has recovered to go on a four-game winning streak. ODU is also a pretty good team that could probably make a push into the NCAA tournament. After a week off after the ODU game, Virginia faced a fired-up Liberty squad at home. The Flames were ranked No. 22 at the time. The Cavaliers soundly defeated them, though, 8-2. This past weekend, the team swept Georgia Tech at home, 4-3, 4-3 (11 innings), and 3-1. The 'Hoos are now 41-9 overall and 21-6 in the ACC and ranked No. 1 in the country. The problem is if the ACC tournament were to start today, Virginia would actually be the third seed. How is that possible? Well, Miami is actually ahead of UVa in the Coastal Division at 22-5. Meanwhile, FSU is leading the Atlantic Division at 19-8. Even though Virginia won two out of three against FSU, it could not be ahead of FSU in ACC tournament because FSU is leading its division. Virginia also took two out of three from Miami, though, so if the 'Hoos and Hurricanes finish with the same number of wins in the ACC, then Virginia would win the tiebreaker and indeed have the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament. Miami faces UNC at home this weekend while Virginia travels to face Wake Forest (27-24, 13-14 ACC). Before that, though, the Cavs host VCU, which is 33-15, Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Wahoos downed the Rams in Richmond, 5-4, in 10 innings April 22.

Men's basketball: After Maryland point guard Seth Allen transferred a couple weeks ago, momentum was building that he was actually headed to Charlottesville to play for UVa for two seasons after sitting out next year. However, on Saturday, he chose Virginia Tech instead. Allen said he wants to play more at point and less at shooting guard and Maryland has a point guard recruit coming in. Certainly, he can probably find more playing time at Tech than at UVa, where he would need to contend with London Perrantes for starting playing time.

The next big recruiting target for the team is 16-year-old Ukrainian Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard whose recruitment has blown up in the last month or so after he was at a Nike Hoops Summit in March and impressed. More and more big schools are involved in his recruiting. UVa coach Tony Bennett has been recruiting him for awhile, though, so we will have to see what happens. Another possibility is he plays pro ball in Europe until he can enter the NBA Draft at 18.

Men's tennis: The men's tennis team cruised into the NCAA tournament Round of 16 with a 4-0 win over Army in the first round then a 4-1 win over Penn State in the second round over the weekend. Against the Nittany Lions, the Cavs lost the doubles point but they had no trouble in singles. The men next face Notre Dame on Friday in Georgia. Virginia beat the Irish earlier this season, 6-1.

Women's tennis: Like the men, the women are easily in the Round of 16 after beating Youngstown State, 4-0, and Kentucky, 4-1. Virginia next faces Baylor on Thursday in Georgia. The UVa women have never been past the Round of 16.

Men's lacrosse: Though it was better than last year's playoff-less year, the Cavaliers' season came to an end Sunday at home in a NCAA tournament first-round loss to Johns Hopkins, 14-8. Virginia got out to a 2-0 lead, got down 8-2, and then closed to within 9-8 but could not complete the comeback.

Women's lacrosse: The women are into the third round of the tournament after a bye in the first round and a 13-11 win over Princeton at home Sunday. The Wahoos face North Carolina on the road Saturday. The Tar Heels beat the Cavaliers, 14-10, earlier this season in Charlottesville.
