Wahoo wanderings

Baseball: It took all year, but the Cavaliers finally lost a series, dropping two of three at Wake Forest on Friday and Saturday (the Cavaliers won their final regular-season home game Tuesday vs. VCU, 12-3). Virginia had game one in hand Friday before giving up three runs in the ninth that tied the contest at 5. Wake won it in the 10th. Virginia bounced back in Game 2 of the doubleheader Friday and won, 7-2. In the final game Saturday, Wake led 4-1 in the ninth inning before Virginia cut it to 4-3 with the bases loaded, but Nick Howard struck out to end the game. Earlier in the day, Miami beat UNC, sealing its Coastal Division championship. It didn't matter that UVa lost to the Demon Deacons in game three of the series. Miami finished with an ACC record of 24-6 while UVa was 22-8.

Virginia will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming ACC tournament this week in Greensboro, N.C. The tournament is divided up into two pools. Pool A is No. 1 Miami, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Clemson, No. 8 Georgia Tech, and No. 9 Wake Forest. Pool B is No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Virginia, No. 6 Maryland, No. 7 North Carolina, and No. 10 N.C. State. The bottom four teams in the ACC -- Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame -- did not make the tournament. On Tuesday, Georgia Tech and Wake play and UNC and N.C. State play. The winners keep playing in their pool. The tournament then continues with round-robin pool play. Virginia faces Maryland at 11 a.m. Thursday, the winner of UNC-N.C. State on Friday at 7 p.m., and FSU on Saturday at 7 p.m. Virginia did not face Maryland or N.C. State this season and took two of three each from UNC and FSU. The winners in each pool after round-robin play face each other in the title game Sunday at 1 p.m. All the pool play games can be seen on Comcast SportsNet. The championship game will be shown on ESPN2.

Men's tennis: Virginia is cruising so far and has won each of its past two matches, 4-1 over Notre Dame, and 4-0 over Baylor over the weekend, to make it into the NCAA tournament semifinals for the fifth straight season. The Wahoos face No. 1-seeded USC on Monday in Athens, Ga.

Women's tennis: The Cavs made it further than they ever have, beating Baylor easily, 4-1 in the Round of 16 on Thursday. Saturday, though, UVa lost to Stanford, 4-2 in the quarterfinals, ending their season.

Women's lacrosse: The lacrosse team stormed back from 8-4 down at UNC on Saturday to stun the Tar Heels, 10-9. Virginia advances to the NCAA tournament semifinals for the first time since 2007 where it will take on Syracuse in Towson, Md., on Friday. The Orange topped the Wahoos, 18-14, in February in Charlottesville. Virginia had lost by four goals to UNC in the regular season as well so hopefully the ladies' revenge tour can continue.

Men's basketball: Meant to mention this in my last Wahoo Wanderings: Highly thought of European recruit Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk is probably going to decide his next stop May 21. That's Wednesday. He's reportedly deciding between Kansas, Virginia, and continuing to play in Europe before heading to the NBA in a couple years.
