'Hoos barbecue Hogs, capture Charlottesville Regional title

Virginia 9, Arkansas 2

Like Friday vs. Bucknell, Virginia put together good pitching and hitting Sunday to stick a fork in the Razorbacks and move on to the super regionals. Arkansas beat Bucknell, 10-0, earlier in the day to earn the right to face the Cavs for the second day in a row.

Arkansas put freshman Zach Johnson on the mound, a guy that had only two starts all season but a solid 1.80 ERA and 2-2 record in 24 appearances. He looked terrific through two innings not allowing a hit.

In the third inning, you could've applied a 'Hoo basketball term for the Cavaliers offense: Cavalanche. Virginia scored six runs. The Wahoos added three runs in the ninth for even more insurance after the Hogs scored two in the seventh, driving Virginia starter Brandon Waddell out of the game. The sophomore pitched a really nice 6 2/3 innings, though, giving up the two runs on seven hits while striking out four. Whit Mayberry closed the door on the Razorbacks.

Offensively, Derek Fisher went 2 for 4 with four RBI and and a run. John La Prise went 3 for 5 with two RBI and a run. Mike Papi and Joe McCarthy also had RBI for the Cavs.

It is the fifth time in the last six years that Virginia has won a regional and moved on to Super Regionals. In

those Super Regionals, Virginia has faced Mississippi, Oklahoma, UC Irvine, and Mississippi State. This year, the Cavs will take on none other than the Maryland Terrapins, who beat South Carolina two days in a row in the Columbia Regional (4-3 Saturday and then, incredibly, 10-1 on Sunday) on the Gamecocks' home field, no small feat because South Carolina had won 28 straight home playoff games.

Maryland defeated Virginia, 7-6, in the ACC tournament this season. The teams did not play a regular-season series. Virginia will host the Terps in either a Friday-Sunday three-game series or Saturday-Monday series this coming weekend.
