Virginia topped TCU in 15 innings Tuesday, 3-2, when Daniel Pinero sent a deep fly out to center field, allowing pinch runner Thomas Woodruff to tag up from third base for the winning run. It was the longest game in CWS history. Nate Irving crushed a pitch to the left field wall for a ground rule double to start the inning and then Woodruff entered the game. The Virginia pitching staff was excellent, allowing just nine hits and one earned run (two total) while striking out 15. Brandon Waddell started the game and went seven innings, Nick Howard then went four scoreless, Whit Mayberry went two, ad Artie Lewicki went the final two and picked up the win.
Virginia next plays Friday at 8 p.m. against the winner of Mississippi and TCU, who play Thursday in an elimination game.
