Wahoo wanderings

Baseball: After being on the border for awhile, Virginia officially stamped its ticket to the ACC tournament Friday. Actually, Duke stamped it for the Cavs by beating Wake Forest. That loss for the Demon Deacons guaranteed Virginia a spot in the tournament. Later, Virginia beat North Carolina for the second straight day to clinch the spot for the second time, if you will. Should the Wahoos sweep North Carolina today, it would clinch the No. 7 seed in the tournament. If it loses, I think UVa will be the No. 8 or 9 seed. I don't think the 'Hoos can fall to the No. 10 seed, but don't hold me to that. No matter what, the Cavaliers will play in the first round of the tournament Tuesday in Durham when the No. 7 seed faces the No. 10 team and the No. 8 seed squares off against the No. 9 seed.

Virginia was down 1-0 to UNC most of the first game of the series Thursday but won 2-1 in 10 innings. UVa won 6-2 on Friday. Since losing two of three to N.C. State and for a second time this season to Old Dominion, UVa has won five of six, including two of three over Duke last weekend.

It is now looking likely that UVa has done enough to get into the NCAA tournament. The Wahoos are 32-19. The 13 games above .500 is the best they've done this year. However, don't expect UVa to host a regional. It will likely be a No. 2 or 3 seed somewhere else.

Men's lacrosse: Virginia was clobbered by Johns Hopkins, 19-7, in the first round of the NCAA tournament at home Sunday. UVa had beaten Hopkins, 16-15, in overtime during the regular season. The Cavs finished the season 10-5.

Women's lacrosse: The UVa women went a step further than the men but still lost in disappointing fashion at home. The 'Hoos cruised in round one, beating Winthrop, 18-6, but then lost to Penn State, 13-11. Oddly enough, like the men, UVa had already faced PSU in the regular season, and had defeated the Nittany Lions by the same 16-15 score that the men beat Hopkins by. UVa finished the season 12-7.

Men's tennis: Virginia cruised into the Elite Eight of the tournament Thursday by topping Columbia, 4-0. The Cavs beat St. John's and Minnesota by the same 4-0 score in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. Today, UVa tries to get to the semifinals when it faces Texas A&M.

Women's tennis: The team couldn't duplicate the success from last season when it reached the quarterfinals. This time, they lost in the round of 16, 4-3, to Baylor. In the first two rounds, Virginia took down VCU, 4-0, and South Carolina, 4-2. UVa finished the season 23-6.

Golf: The men are sixth after two days at their regional in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., two strokes behind Georgia. The final round is today. The top five teams from the regional advance to the NCAA championships in Bradenton, Fla. The women are set to play in the NCAA championships, also located in Bradenton. In women's golf, the top six teams from each region advance. Virginia finished fifth in the regional located in St. George, Utah. The championships start next Friday.

Track and field: With one more day to go in the ACC championships in Tallahassee, the men are first and the women are fourth.
