College football picks

Last week: 6-4 Overall: 19-9

No. 22 BYU at Michigan, Noon ABC
BYU has two, almost three, fourth-quarter comebacks this season, beating Nebraska and Boise State but losing to UCLA. Since losing at Utah on the road to open the Jim Harbaugh era, the Wolverines have blown out Oregon State and UNLV. So this game is a little hard to judge. But I think Michigan is ready to win a game like this, close in the fourth quarter.
Michigan 27, BYU 24

No. 20 Georgia Tech at Duke, Noon ESPN2
The Yellow Jackets disappointed last week, barely hanging with Notre Dame and then making a run at the end of the game to make it sort of interesting as a road favorite. They are another team tough to judge. Their wins were impressive, when they scored in the 60s, but came against Tulane and Alcorn State. Duke also beat Tulane, and North Carolina Central, and then lost to surprise team Northwestern last week at home. I don't think the Blue Devils will do enough to slow the Tech offense.
Georgia Tech 30, Duke 24

No. 8 LSU at Syracuse, Noon ESPN
The Tigers feature Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette (8.2 ypc) at running back and have looked very good early in the season with victories over Mississippi State and Auburn. Brandon Harris has been surprisingly efficient at QB. Syracuse is actually 3-0, but the wins have come against Rhode Island, Wake, and Central Michigan in OT. Also, the Orange are down to their third QB, Zack Mahoney, after Eric Dungey went out with an injury last week. I will be surprised if this is close.
LSU 33, Syracuse 13

Virginia Tech at East Carolina, 3:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN2
ECU has given Tech problems before, winning last year in Blacksburg and in 2008 in Greenville. Also, I heard a crazy stat on the radio -- something like Tech has been the favorite in eight straight meetings between these two teams but has not covered in any of those games. This Pirates' team doesn't seem to be very good, though, only beating Towson 28-20 before falling to Florida and Navy, the latter by a score of 45-21. Former QB-WR tandem Shane Carden and Justin Hardy won't be able to terrorize the Hokies' secondary this year. The Hokies' offense looked surprisingly sharp last week in scoring 44 points against Purdue. The Pirates might stick around for awhile but Tech should win this game.
Virginia Tech 31, East Carolina 21

Tennessee at Florida, 3:30 p.m. CBS
Florida is 3-0 but I think 2-1 Tennessee is the better team. The Vols should be 3-0 but gave up a big lead against Oklahoma and lost in OT. The Gators have beaten the likes of New Mexico State, ECU, and Kentucky. It will be interesting to watch how UT reacts in its first road game of the season. I like the Vols in a fairly close one.
Tennessee 30, Florida 23

No. 9 UCLA at No. 16 Arizona, 8 p.m. ABC
Another tough game to judge. The Bruins took care of business at home against Virginia, crushed UNLV, and then edged BYU, also at home. Arizona struggled against an inferior opponent the first week, but has looked better in housing Nevada and Northern Arizona the past two weeks. The Wildcats have been unchallenged for the most part, though. I'll take the Bruins in a close game.
UCLA 28, Arizona 27

No. 18 Utah at No. 13 Oregon, 8:30 p.m. Fox
The Utes have some nice victories over Michigan, Utah State, and Fresno State, but Oregon has been challenged the most, losing by just three at Michigan State, which is now ranked No. 3. The Ducks have allowed a lot of points against teams they are better than -- 42 to Eastern Washington and 28 to Georgia Southern --  and that is concerning. But I like the Ducks at Autzen Stadium.
Oregon 34, Utah 33
