Hokies, Hurricanes both looking to bounce back

Miami at Virginia Tech, 7 p.m. ESPN

The Hokies were feeling good at 4-1 and up to No. 17 in the top 25 after beating North Carolina, 34-3, on the road two weeks ago. Then Syracuse happened last week. I told the Hokies to be careful, but didn't really expect them to lose. Syracuse looked great in defeating Tech, 31-17, in the Carrier Dome, and new Orange coach Dino Babers got some attention for his fired up postgame locker-room speech. Miami similarly was feeling good two weeks ago at 4-0 headed into a matchup with rival Florida State at home. A blocked extra point prevented the Hurricanes from going to overtime with the Seminoles and they lost, 20-19. Last week, they suffered suffered their second consecutive home loss after falling to North Carolina, 20-13. Thursday nights at Lane Stadium have been great home environments for the Hokies over the years. This is a great situation for Tech to get back on track at home against a reeling Miami team that has lost two in a row at home while scoring just 32 points and now has to go on the road to face a rival and hostile atmosphere.
