Since I got you ready for Virginia's ACC-Big Ten Challenge game at home against Ohio State, the Cavaliers have gone 2-1 and are now ranked No. 14 in the AP poll.
Virginia 63, Ohio State 61: Like the game in Columbus last year, the Cavaliers and Buckeyes played a close game, only the charged atmosphere created by the John Paul Jones Arena crowd made it seem like a more intense game than the rather quiet crowd at Ohio State did in 2015. Virginia had plenty of problems in facing the undefeated Buckeyes and fell behind by 16 points in the first half. The Cavaliers got it down to 12 at the break and then opened the second half on an 11-0 run to get right back into the game. OSU got back up by eight before UVa's final push, giving it the win. London Perrantes had 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and made 4 of 8 3s, all in the second 20 minutes. Devon Hall was the only other Cavalier in double figures with 12 points (2 of 4 from 3), and Marial Shayok had eight.
West Virginia 66, Virginia 57: The Wahoos suffered their first loss of the season in Charlottesville on Dec. 3 against the Mountaineers, whom they beat at Madison Square Garden a year ago, 70-54. The loss snapped Virginia's 24-game home winning streak. It was also the first time UVa lost by more than seven points since the blowout at Tennessee on Dec. 30, 2013, a particularly amazing stat. The final score was even a little misleading as the game was nick-and-tuck the entire second half. The score was tied with 90 seconds left, and the Mountaineers just made more plays down the stretch. The game was a little bit like the opposite of the one at MSG last season. In that one, WVU got out to a big lead before Virginia made the margin six at the half then won going away. At JPJ, Virginia bolted out to a 17-6 lead before WVU came back to briefly take a lead near the end of the first half before UVa's Jack Salt put in a basket right before the buzzer to put the 'Hoos up 25-24 going to the locker rooms. Darius Thompson was the only 'Hoo in double figures with 14 points. Shayok added nine. WVU forced UVa into 14 turnovers, three from Perrantes, who had seven assists, but just six points on 2-of-10 shooting (1 of 7 beyond the arc). The Mountaineers, bad free throw shooters coming into the contest, sank 16 of 19 at the line. UVa, meanwhile, was just 7 of 13.
Virginia 76, East Carolina 53: The Cavaliers got off to a little bit of a slow start Tuesday at home, but ended up leading 42-20 at the half on the way to cruising past the Pirates. In contrast to the matchup against the Mountaineers, UVa had five players with at least 10 points: Kyle Guy (13), Mamadi Diakite (12), Perrantes (12), Shayok (12), and Jarred Reuter (10). Virginia made 9 of 21 3s with seven of those coming in the first half. Guy was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, Shayok 2 of 5, and Perrantes 2 of 4.
Virginia is off until Dec. 17 when it hosts Robert Morris. After that will be a tough road trip Dec. 21 to California.
