Francesco Badocchi, "Frankie," an Italian forward finishing up high school in Kansas, committed to the Cavaliers for the 2017 season Sunday.
Badocchi, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound three-star prospect, also had scholarship offers from Illinois and Wichita State and interest from Kansas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Florida Gulf Coast. He visited UVa a couple of weeks ago.
He's been compared to Akil Mitchell, who played from 2010-2014. Badocchi is described as springy, and his 2017 highlight tape includes lots of dunking.
His coach, Rick Zych, said this about Badocchi for an April 20 story in The Daily Progress: "He is truly a basketball player. He can score on the block, shoot you a jumper, he cuts well to the basket. I think Coach Bennett is the one that said he can cover a one through a five with his length and the way he moves his feet."
Badocchi is expected to redshirt the coming season with Isaiah Wilkins, Mamadi Diakite, and Jay Huff ahead of him on the depth chart at forward, not to mention Jack Salt filling a spot in the post as well, though he is more of a true center.
Virginia still has two scholarships left after the graduation of London Perrantes and the transfers of Darius Thompson, Marial Shayok, and Jarred Reuter. The Cavaliers added Rutgers transfer Nigel Johnson at the beginning of April. UVa is expected to wait until next year and use those final two spots for the 2018 class. Wilkins and Devon Hall, along with Johnson, will graduate after next season, giving Virginia the ability to sign five for that 2018 class, provided there aren't any transfers after the 2017-18 campaign, never a given with the current college basketball landscape.
