Week 5 college picks

Last week: 4-5 Season: 23-12

I missed on quite a few picks last week. FSU struggled to an 0-2 start with QB Deondre Francois out for the year while N.C. State got a huge road win down there, Duke might be making another run at a Coastal Division title (we will know more after this week), and my score prediction was close for TCU-Oklahoma State but I missed the winner. This week, we have a bye week for Virginia and a relatively quiet week overall in college football, but there are some interesting games, and the biggest one centers on the ACC on Saturday night.

National game of the week
No. 2 Clemson at No. 12 Virginia Tech, 8 p.m. ABC
The Tigers defeated the Hokies, 42-35, last season in the ACC championship on their way to winning the national title. It was 35-14 in the second half, but Tech came back to make the game interesting and did have the ball at the end of the game with a chance to tie before an interception by Clemson sealed the win. The teams have changed quite a bit since then. Deshaun Watson, Wayne Gallman, and Mike Williams are gone from Clemson's offense and Tech's offense no longer has Jerod Evans, Isaiah Ford, and Bucky Hodges. The new QBs are Kelly Bryant for Clemson and Josh Jackson for Tech. Bryant is a junior who was waiting his turn, and Jackson is a redshirt freshman who won the Hokies' competition. Both have been impressive and mostly been able to avoid turnovers, though Bryant did toss two picks against Boston College last week in a game in which the Tigers surprisingly struggled. Clemson has had a better overall schedule with wins over Auburn and Louisville. Tech's victim list includes West Virginia (about even with those two teams or maybe a little worse), East Carolina (whom Tech fell behind early), Old Dominion (ODU never had a chance, but Tech's offense got off to a very slow start), and Delaware. I think Clemson is more battle tested and its defense is a little better. It's going to be a great environment and Tech certainly has a chance to pull the upset, but I'll go with Clemson in a fairly close game.
