Wahoo Wanderings

Let's get some spring sports updates and see where some teams will be headed for NCAA tournaments:

Baseball: UVa, which was off last weekend, finished its series the weekend before at home against Clemson by losing another one-run game, 9-8. The Cavaliers have lost nine one-run games this season. They are now 25-20 overall and 9-15 in the ACC. They did beat VCU, 2-0, on May 1.  I was wrong on my previous edition of Wahoo Wanderings. Twelve teams make the ACC tournament, not 10. UVa is holding on to the final spot right now, a game ahead of Virginia Tech, and the 'Hoos have the tiebreaker having beaten the Hokies in their series this season. Their final two ACC series are against Georgia Tech starting today at home and at Wake Forest next weekend. Both the Yellow Jackets and Demon Deacons are 11-13 in the league. Virginia will at least want to win both series to help assure itself of getting into the ACC tournament. Tech's final two series are against Miami and North Carolina.

Men's lacrosse: The Cavaliers fell flat against Notre Dame in the ACC tournament final, losing 17-7. But on Sunday, they received their first NCAA tournament bid since 2015. They'll travel to No. 6 seed Loyola (Md.) for a first-round match Saturday at 7:15 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The Cavaliers, who are 12-5, defeated the Greyhounds, who are 12-3, in the season opener for both teams in Charlottesville on Feb. 10, 13-12 in double overtime.

Women's lacrosse: Despite being just 9-9, Virginia received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. It faces 15-4 Stanford in Harrisonburg tonight at 6 p.m. in the first round. The victor will take on No. 3 seed James Madison on Sunday.

Men's tennis: The Wahoos ended up making the NCAA tournament with their 13-12 record and faced VCU in New York this morning. UVa cruised to a 4-0 win and will face Columbia (17-4) or Monmouth (15-13) on Saturday at noon.

Women's tennis: This team also made the tournament at 15-7 and defeated VCU this morning, 4-2, in Columbia, S.C. The ladies will face Quinnipiac (15-7) or South Carolina (19-6) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Men's golf: After finishing fourth at the ACC championship, the Cavaliers received a bid to the Norman, Okla., Regional. Play begins Monday. There are 14 teams in the regional and five will make it out and advance to the NCAA championship.

Women's golf: The 'Hoos finished second out of 18 at the Madison, Wis., Regional, which ended Wednesday, good enough to make the NCAA championships, which start next Friday in Stillwater, Okla. Six teams made it out of the regional.
