Crushing Richmond is one thing, but now let's see if UVa steps up for big, bad Indiana.
OK, the Hoosiers aren't that great, but as I said before last year's game, they have indeed had more recent success than the Cavaliers. Virginia took care of business last year at home against William & Mary before promptly falling to Indiana, 34-17. In that loss, UVa was up 3-0, and the defense was controlling Indiana's offense, which was being led by QB Richard Lagow. But then he was taken out of the game, Peyton Ramsey entered, and the Hoosiers took off while UVa never recovered. The two split time the rest of the year, and Indiana ended up 5-7.
This season, Virginia needs to get ready for two QBs, but it should see them coming. The Hoosiers utilized two signal-callers in their 38-28 win last week over FIU: Ramsey and Michael Penix Jr. Both
can run and throw, though neither is a runner on the scale of UVa's Bryce Perkins. The two players expected to be Indiana's top rushers are out: Morgan Ellison is suspended, and Cole Gest tore his ACL last week. Indiana doesn't have the weapons it had last season on offense, such as 6-foot-3 wideout Simmie Cobbs Jr., who is now on the Redskins' practice squad, but Ramsey has proven to be a dangerous QB.
Indiana allowed FIU to rush for more than 4 yards per carry last Saturday, so hopefully UVa can get something going with not only Perkins, but Jordan Ellis as well. The Hoosiers' defensive backs are the strength of the unit, much like they are for Virginia. The weather could play a factor, as it is expected to be rainy. That could hurt Indiana, as it is more likely to want to go to the air more than UVa.
I really like what I saw last week, but I'm not ready to completely trust UVa yet. I've been burned many times. I'm not ready to say, for sure, that last week's performance against an FCS team is going to translate to a matchup against a Big Ten team. I do think this will be a closer game than last season, but I'm going with Indiana, though I could see the Wahoos winning in Bloomington in a tight affair like they did in 2011.

What can I say, HooAmp? You know your Hoos.
ReplyDeleteI do Pronker. Virginia is a favorite over Ohio and it makes me uncomfortable. I picked us in this slot last season against UConn, but Ohio is probably much better being the MAC favorite.
