Wahoo Wanderings: Men's lacrosse brings home ACC crown

The Virginia men's lacrosse team defeated Notre Dame, 10-4, on Saturday at Klocker Stadium for the 18th ACC tournament championship in program history and first since 2010.

With 4:11 left in the first quarter, it was 2-2. The Cavaliers then went on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. Dox Aitken led UVa with a hat trick, and goalie Alex Rhodes had 11 saves.

Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU. The winner will take on Towson or Maryland the following weekend.

The No. 1 seed is Penn State (14-1), and the No. 2 seed is Duke (11-4), which has beaten Virginia in 19 of their past 20 meetings. The Blue Devils are the one ACC team the Wahoos haven't beaten this season. If they both keep advancing, they'd meet in the semifinals.

Women's lacrosse: UVa (12-6) earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first-round bye. Navy (15-4) and High Point (15-4) face off Friday in Charlottesville, and the Cavaliers face the winner Sunday at noon. The victor from there takes on North Carolina, Florida, or Johns Hopkins.

Men's tennis: After beating St. John's in the first round of the NCAA tournament 4-0 on Friday, UVa advanced to tennis' version of the Sweet 16 with a 4-1 win over South Carolina on Saturday. The No. 5 'Hoos (23-4) host No. 12 Stanford (19-6) on Saturday 1 p.m.

Women's tennis: No. 21 Virginia fell, 4-1, to No. 4 South Carolina (22-3) in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday. The Cavaliers finished the season 18-9.

Women's golf: UVa is in second place at the Auburn Regional after posting a two-day total of 579. Duke is first at 577. On Tuesday, the Wahoos posted the best one-round score, 283, of any team at the regional (there are 18 schools). The mark is tied for the second-lowest one-round score in NCAA regional play in program history. Virginia is 10 strokes up on Auburn and Tennessee, which are tied for sixth. The top six after the third day advance to the NCAA championships.
