UVa snags third four-star pledge for 2020 class

Nothing much was happening in the world of sports Wednesday evening. No live baseball games. Wimbledon is going on, but it held its men's quarterfinals earlier in the day, long over by nightfall. The sports fan was down to just watching the ESPYs on TV.

But Wahoo Nation was buzzing.

Tony Bennett picked up his third Class of 2020 commitment at 7 p.m. from Jabri Abdur-Rahim, a 6-foot-6 small forward out of Blair Academy in New Jersey.

Abdur-Rahim, son of former NBA star Sharif Abdur-Rahim, is a four-star prospect and a near-consensus top-50 recruit, ranked as high as No. 28 overall by ESPN.com. He's got a 6-10 wingspan,

loves defense, and can shoot 3-pointers and score in other ways. He was one of the best 3-point shooters at the NBA Top 100 camp held at JPJ in the spring.

His dad is now commissioner of the G-League and smart in his own right, going back to get his degree at Cal after his playing days -- which ran from 1996-2008 with the Grizzlies, Hawks, Trail Blazers, and Kings -- were over.

Abdur-Rahim said he felt most comfortable with Virginia's coaching staff, especially Bennett, and knows UVa can get him where he wants to go -- the NBA like his father. Abdur-Rahim chose UVa over Michigan, and a whole host of other great schools offered.

Not only is Abdur-Rahim Bennett's third 2020 commitment, but he's the third four-star pledge, joining Carson McCorkle and Reece Beekman. Even if it's not this coming season, UVa will be back in the thick of the Final-Four-and-beyond conversation soon.
