UVa picks up four-star defensive lineman Bryce Carter from Richmond area

With no Virginia-Michigan State basketball game to write about tonight, I thought I’d take a moment to acknowledge momentum for the football program that hasn’t been generated by the four-game winning streak, but rather on the recruiting trail.

Last Thursday, the Wahoos landed an in-state four-star recruit from the state of Virginia, their highest-rated pledge in the Class of 2021.

Bryce Carter, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end prospect, committed to the Cavaliers out of Life Christian Academy in Chester, between Richmond and Petersburg. Bryce Hall, Bryce Perkins, Bryce Carter. That has a ring to it.
Carter boasts an impressive offer list: Florida, Georgia, Michigan State, N.C. State, Nebraska, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech, among others. This is a really nice pull for coach Bronco Mendenhall and his staff.

Carter played three seasons at Thomas Dale High School before transferring to Life Christian for his final season. He changed his status from the Class of 2021 to the Class of 2022 when he transferred, but apparently he is reclassifying again and will join the Class of the 2021 and the Wahoos next fall.

With his reclassification, Carter becomes the second four-star recruit in Virginia’s class along with OT Logan Taylor, also an in-state prospect out of Episcopal in Alexandria. 247Sports rates Carter the 92nd-best player nationally in the class, and No. 3 in the state of Virginia. Rivals ranks him seventh in the state.

UVa’s Class of 2021 now ranks No. 25 nationally and No. 5 in the ACC, according to 247Sports. There is no doubt Mendenhall’s staff has been putting together better and better classes, and this is more proof. The fact that Carter is an in-state guy makes his commitment even more awesome.

I also like this pledge a lot because UVa just lost a difference-maker on the defensive line in sophomore Jowon Briggs. He said he is transferring to Cincinnati, which also is his hometown. Briggs was a four-star recruit as well. Hopefully Carter can make an early impact like Briggs did. But actually stick around.

Chalking up wins on the football field is very important. It is also great to have success on the recruiting trail. Virginia will have a chance Saturday to keep up this gridiron momentum when it faces the Hokies (hopefully). The Wahoos are looking for their fifth straight victory in 2020 and second consecutive against Tech. The last time UVa beat Tech in back-to-back seasons was 1997-98.
