BIZZARE FEW DAYS AS SPORTS JOURNALIST
Within the past 3-4 days, the Penn State child sex abuse scandal has surfaced, boxing great Joe Frazier has died, Joe Paterno has been fired, and Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has been kidnapped in Venezuela. It has been a weird few days. And if you go back less than a month to Oct. 16, IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon died in a fiery wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
As a sports page designer, I don't have to report on these subjects, however, they do cause headaches as you try to piece together the next day's paper. The last few days have thrown wrenches into my plans, often late at night. So far though, I think I've handled everything well.
There's only so much I can say about these subjects. Everything that has happened is a travesty. They all highlight the darker side of humans. Paterno and Penn State --the situation as a whole -- makes me feel sick. Paterno was someone I respected as a great football coach and man. We don't completely know what Paterno had been told, but there is no doubt his reputation has been sullied and he said himself he could have done more about the situation. To me, it sounds like he is admitted some sort of wrongdoing, or at least knows he ignored something he should not have ignored.
Usually, sports provides a great escape from reality where you can forget your worries and the world's problems. Unfortunately, within the past month, even sports has been unable to provide a solace.
