The Virginia baseball team hosts Florida State this weekend in a big ACC series.
The Cavaliers are ranked No. 8 in the latest USA Today coaches poll and the Seminoles are tabbed as the No. 6 team in the nation in the same poll.
The series was set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday, a game I had a ticket to. Late in the afternoon, the game was pushed back to 8 p.m. I went with my friend Jack and, as we got to Davenport Field, the game was pushed back again to 8:30. It continued to rain off and on as we waited. 8:30 came and passed and then about 8:45, it was announced that the game was postponed until Saturday, when a doubleheader will be played beginning at 1 p.m. Lots of college games Friday were postponed until Saturday because of the rain yet Virginia tried to wait out the weather. Jack and I were trying to figure out why and we are not sure there is a good answer. I think UVa athletics made a mistake by trying to hold the game on an obviously volatile evening with storms in the area along with tornado watches. The weather all day was unstable. I think the game should have been postponed by 4 p.m. Instead, the players and the fans came out to the ballpark but it ended up just being a headache as fans sat in the rain and players put the tarp on the field, then took it off, then brought it back on.
The series is a big one for the 'Hoos, who are 32-6 and 13-5 in the ACC. The Seminoles are 31-6, 13-5. Despite the gaudy record, Virginia has struggled recently, as it dropped a midweek game last week to Radford at home and then lost two of three to Georgia Tech on the road over the weekend. Most recently, the Cavaliers found themselves down 7-2 to Old Dominion at home Wednesday but a Mike Papi grand slam and Jared King game-winning RBI helped the Cavs come back and overthrow the Monarchs 10-9 in 10 innings.
