Yale at No. 8 Virginia, 2 p.m. Sunday ESPN3.com
EDIT: I started writing this post before the home opener against St. Francis. I'm finishing it after, but have not watched any of the game.
Virginia cruised to an easy win over North Carolina Greensboro in its opener Friday on the road, 76-51. Marial Shayok led the Wahoos off the bench with 15 points and three steals, Darius Thompson started and hit 3 of his 4 3-pointers and scored 12 points, and London Perrantes (2 of 4 from 3) and Isaiah Wilkins (1 for 1 from 3) put in 10 points each. Jack Salt started in place of, presumably, the suspended Austin Nichols and scored seven points and tied for the team lead in assists with three (haha). Devon Hall (1 of 3 from 3) rounded out the starting rotation and had five points. Kyle Guy played 19 minutes in his much-anticipated debut and hit a 3 and scored seven points while also collecting two steals. It was a nice start for the Cavaliers, who just missed holding another opponent under 50 points when the Spartans hit a 3 in the final seconds. Virginia made 8 of its 16 3-pointers and shot 52 percent for the game and 88.9 percent from the line. The Cavs did turn the ball over 11 times, probably a little sloppy against an inferior opponent.
There is of course no way that the game affected my upcoming prediction. The team was missing Austin Nichols, who could end up being the team's leading scorer, and Mamadi Diakite, perhaps a significant player as well. The team will look different going forward, even more so than it did Friday when compared to last season's squad. Strange not seeing Malcolm Brogdon out there. With that, let's get to a recap of how I've done with my predictions in the past:
My 2010-11 prediction: 14-16 (5-11); actual record: 16-14 (7-9)
My 2011-12 prediction: 21-9 (10-6); actual record: 22-8 (9-7)
My 2012-13 prediction: 17-14 (8-10); actual record: 21-10 (11-7)
My 2013-14 prediction: 23-8 (13-5); actual record: 25-6 (16-2)
My 2014-15 prediction: 24-6 (14-4); actual record: 28-2 (16-2)
My 2015-16 prediction: 25-5 (14-4); actual record: 24-6 (13-5)
Last year was the first year the team underachieved based on my projection -- albeit by just one game in both overall and conference record -- which is funny, since the Wahoos went on to have their best result in the NCAA tournament in Tony Bennett's tenure.
