Another Monday, another championship

It didn't take double overtime. It didn't take overtime. It wasn't even a close game.

No. 3 seed Virginia crushed No. 5 seed Yale 13-9 on Monday in Philadelphia for its sixth men's lacrosse national championship, and it wasn't even that close. The score was 6-2 at halftime and 11-5 after three quarters. Matt Moore led the Cavaliers with four goals, Michael Kraus had a hat trick, Dox Aitken and Petey LaSalla had two goals each, Ian Laviano, Saturday's hero, had one goal, and so did Ryan Conrad. Alex Rode had 13 saves and was named the NCAA tournament's most outstanding player.

The men's lacrosse program is now right behind men's soccer (seven) for most titles at the school.
The men's lacrosse team celebrates its 13-9 victory
over Yale in the title game. The program has six
championships, and the school now has 27.
And of course, this championship comes just 49 days since a previous Monday crowning when, oh yeah, men's hoops topped Texas Tech.

Some more cool stats:

  • Virginia now has 27 NCAA team titles, which ranks it No. 20 for all Division I schools.
  • Like 2018-19 with men's basketball and men's lacrosse, the other academic years in which UVa has won at least two titles are 2014-15 (men's soccer, men's tennis, baseball), 2009-10 (men's soccer and rowing), and 1992-93 (men's soccer and women's lacrosse).
  • Virginia's men's teams are really crushing it the past decade. Those squads have won 10 titles in five sports. No other school has at least six titles, and no other school has won crowns in more than four sports.
The championship helped put a band-aid on the finality to the baseball season. The NCAA tournament selection show was Monday, too, and the Cavaliers were indeed left out for the second straight season. UVa ends its 2019 campaign 32-24. It'll be interesting to see if any coaching changes are made, but Brian O'Connor should be good to go for next season at the very least. He's only a few years removed from back-to-back title game appearances.
