Virginia lands junior college transfer guard

And just like that, Tony Bennett swoops in and picks up a promising transfer, somebody that nobody knew was on the radar.

On Wednesday, 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard Tomas Woldetensae of Indian Hills Community College in Iowa committed to Virginia. He will be immediately eligible and can play two seasons.

Woldetensae, who hails from Italy, was a point guard his first season and more of a shooting guard this past season, meaning he is versatile and can fill in for Virginia in multiple ways, which is huge with the loss of Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, and De'Andre Hunter all from backcourt.

Woldetensae, a lefty, averaged 17.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 2018-19 while shooting a

very strong 47.6 percent on 3-pointers. He was a first-team JUCO All-American. During his freshman season, he recorded 8.8 points, 3.1 assists, and just 1.4 turnovers per game. He shot 89 percent from the line over his two seasons.

In Woldetensae, UVa gets a secondary ballhandler and someone who can knock down shots as well. He is exactly what the Cavaliers needed with only Kihei Clark and incoming freshman Casey Morsell expected to handle the rock in 2019-20: an immediately eligible guard who can do just that when needed.

With Woldetensae's commitment, Virginia is now down to two open scholarships for this coming season if Mamadi Diakite returns -- three if he remains in the NBA draft. Five-star California guard Johnny Juzang will announce his decision among Kentucky, Virginia, Oregon, and Kansas on Friday. It is expected he will choose Kentucky. The Hauser brothers, Sam and Joey, who are transferring from Marquette, are visiting Virginia today and Friday. Their decision is reportedly down to three schools: UVa, Wisconsin, and Michigan State. They have visited Wisconsin already and will check out MSU after their Charlottesville visit.
