Wahoo Wanderings: Baseball takes two of three from No. 5 Louisville

The Virginia baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game home set against Louisville on Friday, 15-7, but took the second game Friday evening, 10-2, and the rubber match, 12-6, Saturday. A sweep of the No. 5 Cardinals would've been difficult to pull off, so this was about the best result Virginia could have hoped for.

With the win, the Wahoos clinched a spot in the ACC tournament. UVa is now 29-21 and 12-15 in the ACC. Louisville is 40-12 and 19-8. Virginia has climbed into the 40s in RPI. To feel better about its chances of making the NCAA tournament as an at-large team, Virginia needs to sweep lowly Virginia Tech this Thursday through Saturday in Blacksburg. The Hokies are 25-25 and 8-19. That would take some pressure off the team at the ACC tournament. At this point, though, Virginia is still likely on the

outside looking in and has some work to do.

Virginia scored 29 runs in the three games vs. Louisville, which came into the series with the ACC's best ERA. In the third game of the series, Virginia scored seven runs in the first inning and four in the second to take an 11-2 lead. Freshman Nic Kent went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and has a team-best 39. Junior Cayman Richardson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and was 6 for 10 in the series. Sophomore leadoff hitter Tanner Morris went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Senior Chesdin Harrington got the start on the mound, his first since April 4, 2017, and pitched a very solid game, going six innings, striking out six, and allowing three earned runs.

Before starting the series at Tech, Virginia hosts VCU in its final home game of the season Tuesday at 6 p.m. UVa won at VCU, 3-2, on April 30.

Men's lacrosse: The Cavaliers clobbered Robert Morris in the first round of the NCAA tournament at home, 19-10, on Saturday. Mikey Herring led the 'Hoos with six goals against the Colonials, and Ryan Conrad added five. It was Virginia's first NCAA tournament victory since 2012.

No. 3 seed Virginia (14-3) faces old ACC rival Maryland in the quarterfinals this Saturday at Hofstra University at noon. ESPNU will televise the contest. Maryland won the teams' most recent matchup, 9-6, in 2014. The Terrapins (12-4) edged No. 6 seed Towson in the first round, 14-13 in overtime. The winner takes on the victor of the Duke-Notre Dame quarterfinal in the semifinals in Philadelphia.

Women's lacrosse: The women are in the NCAA quarterfinals, too, after defeating Navy, 15-12, at home Sunday. The Midshipmen defeated High Point, 16-5, in Charlottesville on Friday to reach the second round. UVa received a first-round bye.

Next, No. 6 seed UVa (13-6) travels to face No. 3 seed North Carolina (16-3) this Saturday, with the time to be announced. The Tar Heels downed the Wahoos in conference play this season, 13-12, and advanced out of the second round with a 15-11 win over Florida.

Men's tennis: UVa is back in the national quarterfinals and facing Wake Forest, which has defeated the Cavaliers twice this season.

Virginia took down Stanford at home, 4-2, on Saturday, and travels to Orlando for the next round against Wake with the match set for Thursday at noon. The Demon Deacons defeated the 'Hoos 6-1 in the regular season, but UVa fared better in the ACC tournament championship, falling 4-2.

Men's golf: UVa opened NCAA regional play at Stanford on Monday and is in eighth place out of 13 schools after the first round. The top five after three rounds will advance to the NCAA championships.

Women's golf: The Cavaliers finished fourth at the Auburn Regional, good enough to make the NCAA championships, starting Friday, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The top six teams from the regional advanced to the NCAA field, which includes 24 teams. It's UVa's 11th appearance in the field. The Wahoos finished with an 873, and Vanderbilt took the regional crown with an 860.

Track and field: The men finished second and the women third at the ACC championships. It was the third second-place finish in five years for the men. Virginia Tech's men won the ACC title, while Florida State took home the women's crown. But the women's third-place finish topped the Hokies' women's finish of fourth, clinching this year's Commonwealth Clash for UVa. Tech had won the all-sports competition the past two seasons for the first time in the history of the event, which dates to the 2014-15 season. The previous incarnation of the series, the Commonwealth Challenge, ran for two years from 2005-07, with UVa winning both times. It was discontinued for several seasons after the Virginia Tech massacre in April 2007.
